In case you don’t use Twitter yet, below are Widgets of all the tweets from me (@energia) and Timo (@leonblank) and the Finnish Oscar discussion. They should update with the latest tweets. But we’ll see how Twitter copes with the huge amount of people sure to be Tweeting tonight.

Timo will be on tv commenting the Oscars gala on Nelonen. Jarmo will be home, but tweeting it all. So join us to watch the Oscars on Sunday!

Right now tanker trucks filled with Botox are running 24/7 to LA to make sure all the important people are wrinkle free next Sunday, for the 82nd Academy Awards.

The Iron Sky gang will still be in Finland, so thankfully we are not required to paralyze our faces. But we’ll be watching. It doesn’t matter how many Botox jokes I make, Oscars are still the highlight of the film year and absolutely unmissable. Especially with Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin hosting the gala.

Thanks to the miracle of time zones the Oscar gala starts at 3AM monday here in Finland. But we’ll be staying up late to watch the Oscars. Our director Timo will be on TV commenting the gala live on Nelonen.

I’ll be on a comfy sofa at home, chatting about the Oscars on Twitter and IRC. Timo will try and join the Tweeting as well. So follow @Energia and @LeonBlank.

If you don’t use Twitter programs I’ll make a blog post on Oscar night and add streams of our tweets and the general Oscar discussions.

See you sunday!

Just got an email from Voddler, the “Spotify for films”, that they will be closing down until March 8th. There are not too many users to be affected by this, but it’s a sign of some more interesting things to come:

Voddler was exposed to an attempted security breach. The Voddler Client, the media-player, was attacked and we take seriously to all offences towards Voddler, our members and the content. Therefore we have decided to close the service until the new website is launched.

The new Voddler will feature web-based movie-player, search tool and mouse control. With a completely web-based movie service Voddler is confident to be able to meet the ever-growing demand for a great selection of free and rentable movies in an accessible environment. The sparkling new Voddler service will not only satisfy the Swedish movie-viewers but the time has come to invite Norway, Denmark and Finland.

I got the invite couple of months ago, but haven’t really used the service except for testing. Even in the client form it was a promising service, way beyond any other VOD system in the Scandinavian countries: meaning it was actually possible to watch films with it! Actually, it was pleasant enought I can’t really complain. Most of the films were free with a couple of pre-roll ads before them. The selection wasn’t great and the new films were only available for rent, but all in all it was as nice as watching videos on a computer can be. I still prefer the sofa and tv, but that’s no fault of Voddler.

Now the coming Flash player should make things even more interesting. It will be interesting to see how tv channels react. My inner optimist is already thinking about the possibility of having a Scandinavian Hulu, but that’s probably too much to hope for. I’ll be happy if we get a VOD service that actually works.

Facebook has become the place where many people spend most of their online time. And it’s way more personal place than say, MySpace. Because of this I think it really does matter how often fan pages post updates. If it’s too often it can get annoying. But how often should you update? In the spirit of democracy we asked fans of Iron Sky how often they’d like to see updates on from us.

167 people responded. Turns out almost half thought once a week is good. While 18% would like daily updates only 5% would like to see several updates a day.

That said, social media is not about doing it by numbers. That means we’ll still post updates when we’ve got something to say, even if it’s more often than once a week. But now I can stop worrying if Facebook should be updated as ofen as Twitter – it shouldn’t.

On a larger scale, this is just a small poll and you shouldn’t read too much into it. But what I think is safe to say is that you shouldn’t syndicate all your Twitter updates to your Facebook page. The two services are used differently and need to be treated as such.

In October 1972 sci-fi author Philip K. Dick contacted the FBI. You’d be forgiven thinking that maybe he was worried about photocopiers that now (since 1968) could infringe on copyrights in full color! Or maybe a case of plagarism. After all, in ten years time his novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” would go on to be adapted as Blade Runner, one of the greatest science fiction films of all time.

But, let’s not forget this is Philip K. Dick we’re talking about, so it turned out to be something far more bizarre.

“I am a well-known author of science fiction novels, one of which dealt with Nazi Germany (called MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, it described an ‘alternate world’ in which the Germans and Japanese won World War Two and jointly occupied the United States).
…
I bring this to your attention because several months ago I was approached by an individual who I have reason to believe belonged to a covert organization involved in politics, illegal weapons, etc., who put great pressure on me to place coded information in future novels ‘to be read by the right people here and there’, as he phrased it. I refused to do this.”

His house had been burglarized a year earlier and Philip K. Dick had become convinced the crime was politically motivated. More specifically, be believed it was the work of Neo-Nazis, possibly due to the anti-nazi tone of Man in the High Castle. So, naturally, he concluded that Nazis were also behind this sinister worldwide organization that was blackmailing science fiction writers into including secret messages in their works.

Apparently, the plan was to “decode” this information in the future and release the startling findings to the public. It was to concinve people, that a virulent and deadly new form of Syphilis (that did not really exist) was being spread in the US by foreign agents. This was to be seen as the first strike of World War III and compel the US to respond, starting the full-scale nuclear war.

How the Nazis would have benefited from this was not clear, but hey, even the best writers love Nazis as villains because everyone knows they are so evil they don’t really need a motivation for perpetrating unspeakable acts of destruction..

In the end the FBI decided this strange case of “Solarcon-6″ did not warrant further study. Possibly wisely, considering that it’s now safe to say WWIII did not start over Syphilis and that two years later, in 1974, while recovering from dental surgery Philip K. Dick started to receive messages from God.

You can read the whole story of Solarcon-6 in the latest issue of the Fortean Times. Registration required, but it’s free.

A big chunk of the Iron Sky team is attending this year’s Berlinale film festival. These festivals are about watching films, but also about doing business. From a filmmakers perspective a festival like this is a chance to meet and find funders, distributors, sponsors and so on. Everybody’s clamoring to be noticed and the days are full of meetings with people, who could help with the movie project one way or another. Then, of course, there’s the side that’s more fun: premieres, parties and generally meeting cool people, like movie makers from other countries.

For the Iron Sky team this has been a working trip. In addition to the business side we have done some casting, worked on the script, discussed about the budget and so on, but luckily there has been a bit of time for other stuff as well.

This time we didn’t do any crazy marketing stunts, but got instead a last minute idea about doing a fan meeting. We got the idea on Monday and decided to have the meeting on Saturday – never mind that we didn’t have an idea how to contact our Berlin fans or what would be a good venue to this. Enter the internet and the social media: using our Demand to see Iron Sky -system and the Wreckamovie.com we got in touch with our Berlin fans and found a simply incredible place for the meeting, a club called c-base. In the end about 40-50 fans showed up, which was really great especially on such a short notice!

How did it go? Come join us in the fan meeting in the latest episode of Iron Sky Signal!

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000"width="480" height="295" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0">

Intrigued about c-base? Here’s their own video about the place.

All in all, so far it has been both a very fun and very productive Berlinale for us. We got to meet a nice bunch of our local fans, a lot of grass roots level work for the movie project got done, we were featured in The Hollywood Reporter and the Zombies got to meet cool people and see some quality cinema.

Still a couple of days to go!

Blogauksen kommenteissa estolistan realiteetteja on esitelty useilla vertauksilla.

Trailer for the Wreckamovie developed cybercrime series Griffin has been released.

Trailer for the Wreckamovie developed cybercrime series Griffin has been released. The trailer was lauched at F-Secure’s SPECIES conference in Vienna and F-Secure is also supporting the Griffin series by giving its insight into the fight against cybercrime.

Good hacker films are still hard to come by. Hollywood makes some lovingly crafted films about gamblers and conmen, but if the con uses computers they usually freak out and decide it absolutely can not be interesting unless they put in explosions and completely make up how computers work. Often this creation of non-existent technologies is to make it all more “accessible” to the average viewer.

The funny thing is that the “average viewer” is not going to blow up military bases by hand-coding a blowfish-encrypted, 3D-accelerated supervirus – but he is the target of the real world cybercrime. And there are enough stories about real cybercrime to fill a terabyte hd with films and tv-shows. Just ask F-Secure’s Mikko Hyppönen for some war stories. Timo did when they first met some years ago and I know he still has several story ideas about cybercrime he wants to do.

So you guessed it, Griffin is inspired by the real stories. And developed by people who use the real internet and Wreckamovie.com. Or as the press release puts it:

Griffin is a made-for-Internet TV series of fictional episodes about online crime, developed by a web community of enthusiasts on the Wreckamovie platform, in co-operation with Internet operators.

The six-part series tells the story of Griffin Sharp, a good guy with a complex past in the world of cybercrime. Each Griffin episode takes place in a different country, and will be produced by local start-up crews and volunteering enthusiasts. F-Secure and the Wreckamovie community are inviting major Internet operators for partnership in this innovative project, which will bring the drama of the fight against cybercrime to millions of people worldwide. This approach will also help consumers understand modern IT threats in a better way.

Anyone can join the Griffin community and be part of creating the story at www.wreckamovie.com/griffin. To watch the trailer, go to www.youtube.com/FSecureNews. The Griffin series will be distributed free of charge on the Internet.

Crowd Controls connects distributors to the grass roots level buzz

The distributors and funders of a movie are always faced with the same question: how much interest there is from the public to see this movie in theaters? A new web service called Crowd Controls aims to answer this question.

Crowd Controls is a tool for filmmakers, musicians and other artists to find where the audiences are located around the world and to guide distribution. Crowd Controls consists of a map and a web form that can be embedded in the artist’s web site. The fans can leave their vote to see the artist in their home city easily, with no need to register. An easy-to-read map shows fans and casual visitors the locations of the other voters, and the system gives the artists a wealth of information and statistics about the votes. Since the users leave their votes using their e-mail address, Crowd Controls is also an excellent tool for sending out locally targeted news, promotions and other information about the movie.

Filmmaker and software developer Brian Chirls built a prototype of the system for the creators of the independent film “Four Eyed Monsters,” who succeeded in showing their film in dozens of cities around the United States. Chirls has since developed the system as a service, and it has been adopted by the upcoming science fiction comedy “Iron Sky,” which takes the concept a step further by mobilizing a large, international online community well in advance of production.

In the world of “Iron Sky,” the Nazis fled to the Moon in 1945, and in the year 2018 they are coming back. “Iron Sky” is the second movie project of the creators of “Star Wreck,” an internet hit that gathered over eight million viewers around the world. “Iron Sky” is a Finnish-German co-production, it has a budget of over five million euros and its cast includes Julia Dietze (1½ Ritter), Götz Otto (Schindler’s List, The Downfall). Tilo Prückner (The Neverending Story, Die Fälscher) and Udo Kier (Dogville, Dancer in the Dark). Since October, the fans of Iron Sky have been able to show their support for the movie using Crowd Controls.

“Filmmakers are beginning to realize that they can’t always count on a distributor to deliver an audience, ” says Chirls. “The ability to collect and visualize audience data eliminates much of the guess work in releasing a film, making it more valuable to distributors and exhibitors or enabling a DIY release. Crowd controls also empowers the fans to make themselves visible to filmmakers and each other, particularly in places that might have otherwise been considered too small or remote to justify a release.”

“Our movie Iron Sky already has a very strong net presence and a large and active fan base online”, commented the director of Iron Sky Timo Vuorensola. “Crowd Controls sounded immediately like just the kind of system that fits the way we work. It gives the fans a direct way to support the movie in a very concrete way. Having a map full of red dots, each of them a fan who has registered using his own e-mail address does a ton of good when talking with the distributors and sponsors. It’s also a great way to reach fans in a certain area and to contact them directly – for example, we are arranging a fan meeting during the Berlin film festival, and with Crowd Controls, we can reach out to our fans in Berlin with invitations. That kind of personal interaction gets fans excited about helping to spread the word and makes for a richer experience with the film.”

Behind the Iron Sky

Iron Sky is a scifi movie that takes place in the year 2018, when the Nazis, who fled the Earth to the dark side of the Moon in 1945, return to claim the Earth. The film is Finnish-German co-production with a budget of over five million euros. It’s directed by Timo Vuorensola and produced by Tero Kaukomaa (Blind Spot Pictures), Samuli Torssonen (Energia) and Oliver Damian (27 Films). The cast includes Julia Dietze (1½ Ritter), Götz Otto (Schindler’s List, The Downfall). Tilo Prückner (The Neverending Story, Die Fälscher) and Udo Kier (Dogville, Dancer in the Dark), and the screenplay is written by the acclaimed sci-fi writer Johanna Sinisalo (Nebula Award nominee 2009, Finlandia 2000). The film will be released in 2011 and distributed by Stealth Media Group.

The first film of Vuorensola and Torssonen was Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning – a fan-made sci-fi parody, which was published both as a free download and as a commercial DVD. The film has reached over eight million viewers all around the world and gathered a strong international fan base.
